Located near the town of Eisfeld, this abandoned brewery is more than just a relic of industrial decline—it is also connected to the darker chapters of 20th-century history. While originally built for beer production, parts of the site were later repurposed during the Second World War as a U-Verlagerung (underground relocation facility).

As Allied air raids intensified, many industrial operations were moved underground or into existing structures to protect them from destruction. The brewery’s cellars and subterranean sections were adapted for this purpose, serving as concealed production or storage areas linked to wartime industry. These spaces reflect the urgent improvisation of the final war years and the exploitation of hidden infrastructure.

Above ground, the brewery today is in a state of advanced decay. Broken windows, corroded metal, and collapsing interiors mark decades of abandonment. Former brewing halls and storage rooms still reveal traces of their original function—pipes, tanks, and machinery fragments—now silent and covered in dust and rust.

Below ground, the atmosphere changes completely. The underground sections feel oppressive and cold, shaped by narrow passages, thick walls, and the absence of daylight. These spaces stand as a reminder of how civilian and industrial sites were absorbed into the wartime machinery, often under harsh conditions.

Today, the Eisfeld brewery is a striking lost place that combines industrial heritage with wartime history. It tells two stories at once: the rise and fall of a local brewery, and its temporary transformation into part of Germany’s underground wartime infrastructure.
